
Rushengura Gorilla Group
Rushengura Gorilla Group- Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is home to the biggest number of habituated gorilla families in the whole world as well as half the total population of mountain gorillas with the other half found in Mgahinga gorilla national park Uganda, Volcanoes national park Rwanda and Virunga national park DR Congo.
The Rushengura mountain gorilla family can be trekked from the Buhoma sector located in the northern side of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park, the Rushengura mountain gorilla family is dominated by Kabukojo the silverback who broke away from the Habinyanja gorilla family to start up his own gorilla family. Yes, Rushegura Gorilla Group is generally considered to be the easiest gorilla family to track in Bwindi Uganda
There was an attempt of another silverback identified as Kabukojo who flee away from the group to form his own gorilla group but later returned with 10 females he had taken and rejoined the group. Rushengura mountain gorilla family was a splinter of the Habinyanja gorilla family.
Other gorilla families in Buhoma
Mubare gorilla family
The popular Mubare gorilla family is the oldest habituated gorilla family in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park, it was habituated and opened for tourism in 1993 and derives its name from Mubare hill in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park where the family was first spotted by trackers. The gorilla family is comprised of 18 members and it is was led by Ruhondeza the silverback who unfortunately died in June 2012 at the age of 50. After the death of Ruhondeza, another silverback Kanyonyi managed to succeed and he be4came a leader. Some gorillas left the group and it is now only 8 members.
Habinyanja gorilla family
Habinyanja mountain gorilla family is also among the oldest habituated gorilla families in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park, the family habituation began in 1997 and was open for tourism in 1999. The gorilla family gets its name from the local word “Nyanja” translated to mean a pool of water because the group was first seen near a swamp in Bwindi impenetrable forest.
Gorilla permits In Buhoma Bwindi
Uganda gorilla permits cost $700 per person per trek and gorilla habituation permits cost $1500 per person per trek. To trek the Rushengura family, one is advised to book a permit in advance of 3-4 months before coming to the country because Buhoma is one of the favorite sectors of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park hence permits are always on high demand.
How many Buhoma Gorilla Permits are available daily?
Buhoma gorilla trekking sector is located in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and there are around five habituated gorillas in Buhoma which include the Mubare gorilla family Muyambi, Katwe gorilla family, Rushegura gorilla family, and Habinyanja gorilla family. Each gorilla trekking family is visited by 8 visitors daily which means that there about 40 gorilla trekking permits that real available for tourists in the Buhoma gorilla trekking sector at any time of the day.
Booking Buhoma gorilla permits
It is important to note that gorilla trekking in the Buhoma sector requires one to have a gorilla trekking permit and this means that you cannot see the gorilla without a gorilla trekking permit. Gorilla trekking on Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is allocated according to the region of the park where the mountain gorilla’s families or groups are located. In case you want to see the gorilla trekking in the Buhoma sector, then you will have to go and book the gorilla permit for the Buhoma sector and get an opportunity to see the habituated gorilla families. The Uganda Wildlife Authority is responsible for the protection of all National parks in Uganda including the gorilla parks of Bwindi, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Further, UWA is the body in charge of releasing the gorilla trekking permits for the Buhoma sector as well as other gorilla trekking regions of the park. The best time to visit the Rushengura gorilla group
Bwindi impenetrable forest national park can be visited at any time of the year but some months are better than the rest. these months are June, July, August, September, December, January, and February. These months are considered to be dry and during this time it’s easy to get to the park and the trekking trails are also not slippery and muddy.
Rushengura mountain gorilla family were habituated in 200 and later opened in 2002 for tourism. This group is now composed of 16 members among which include 1 silverback, 1 black back, 4 juveniles, 4 infants, and 4 adult females. The gorilla family derives its name from the Rushengura area in Bwindi where the group separated from the Habinyanja gorilla family.
