Bwindi impenetrable forest national park located in southwestern Uganda is divided into four main tracking sectors namely Buhoma sector in the north, Ruhija sector in the east, and lastly Rushaga as well as Nkuringo in the south. While booking gorilla permits, tourists would ensure that they get permits in an area where they booked accommodation form.

Buhoma sector of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is the oldest tracking sector located in the northern sector of the park and the most visited sector of Bwindi. This sector was the first to be opened in 1993. Mubare gorilla family located in the Buhoma sector of Bwindi was the first habituated gorilla family to be trekked by tourists.

The reason why Buhoma sector gorilla permits are scarce is that there are always lesser gorilla trekking permits available every day, the sector has only four habituated gorilla families namely Mubare gorilla family, Rushengura gorilla family, Katwe gorilla family, and Muyambi gorilla family giving us only 32 gorilla permits available for trekking per day.

Buhoma sector gorilla permits are scarce because the area is the most easily accessibly part of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park compared to other sectors, Buhoma sector is also the closest sector to the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth national park hence giving tourists an opportunity of seeing tree-climbing lions by passing through Queen Elizabeth national park. Buhoma sector is also very close to Kihihi Airstrip compared to other sectors of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park.

Buhoma sector gorilla permits are scarce because the region has less terrain making it easier to access gorilla families in this sector several tourists booking permits place Buhoma as their priority and at the end of the day, the permits are scarce because of the high demand.

Buhoma sector was the first sector to be established in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park hence the region is well developed compared to other sectors of the park with a wide range of accommodation options ranging from luxury to mid-range to budget options hence attracting all kinds of tourists making the gorilla permits scarce.

Buhoma sector of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park also offers cultural experiences that can be combined with mountain gorilla trekking, travelers can take a visit to Batwa group of people who initially lived in the forests of Bwindi with mountain gorillas for over 500,000 years before they were evicted when the park was being gazetted. The Batwa group of people will take you through the forest and showcase their hunting skills, how they use different plants to act as local medicine and you can learn so much more by taking a visit to their homesteads.

Guided nature walks can also be done at Buhoma sector and this gives you insight into the tropical rainforest as you come across different primates such as blue monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, l’hoest’s monkeys, butterflies, different bird species such as handsome spurfowl, blue-headed sunbird, Kivu ground thrush, black bee-eater, African green pigeon, crown hornbill, giant kingfisher, regal sunbird among others. Bird lovers are advised to move with their binoculars while in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park.

Gorilla permits In Buhoma

Uganda gorilla permits cost $700 for foreign nonresidents, $600 for foreign residents, and shs 250,000 for East African citizens. Gorilla habituation permits cost $1500 and this is done in the Rushaga sector of the park. Tourists intending to trek mountain gorillas in Bwindi are advised to book their gorilla permits in advance most especially those interested in trekking from the Buhoma sector during the peak season.

You will also send us your passport scanned details as a requirement for the Uganda wildlife authority to print out and issue a gorilla trekking permit.
