
Nakuru County
Nakuru County is one of the oldest counties in Kenya and it has existed since Kenya happened because of the historical events that had happened several and many years back. The County is found in the southwestern of the Great Rift Valley in western Kenya and it occupies an area of about 7496square kilometers with both arable and non-arable land.
The County is also characterized by the several water bodies’ species and the forested areas bordering several counties which include Kericho, Narok, Kajiado, Bomet, Baringo Nyandarua, and Laikipai.
The Nakuru town is the major town and the business center of the County and this started as the Whiteland by the British and was always the stopover during the contraction of Uganda a railway because of the activities of the British which were coordinated here. The town grew and it became a town in 1904 before becoming a municipality in 1952. Nakuru County is the headquarter of the county and it is the fourth-largest growing town and urban center in Kenya after Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu.
There are eleven sub-counties in Nakuru county which are subdivided into wards and this was done to ensure that the place is easily managed and administered and providing better-serviced delivery to the Lake Nakuru.
The people of the Nakuru County are diverse and there various tribes of Kenya that is mixed however there other some foreigner’s communities and the Masai are considered as the permanent resident of this County. The tribes available live together in harmony and they assist each other in different activities aimed at improving their wellbeing.
Nakuru town has become one of the major business centers or hubs for the people of Nakuru County and those of the whole of Kenya as well. The concentrations of the railways were so important despite mixed opinions about its construction from the people of Uganda and the Kenyan.
The railway line construction helped Nakuru County to grow and it is one of the reasons why it was given the municipality and most businesses could connect to other cities through the use of the railway line and these included Kisumu and Mombasa. As on now, this County is the central hub on the road From Mombasa as it connects to Kisumu
Nakuru County boasts another town other than Nakuru town and these include the beautiful town centers of the Bahatai, Molo, Subukia, Dundori, Rongai, Maai Mahiu Rongai among several others.
Nakuru mainly depends on agriculture & tourism and agriculture is the major sector bit other sectors of national importance include the manufacturing sector and energy.
There are 2 seasons in Nakuru County when farmers do practice agriculture throughout the year and this is from March to June and October to November for long and short rains respectively. Nakuru County features both Mediterranean type of climate and warm-summer climates.
The major crops grown in this County include maize, potatoes, beans, coffee, Maize, barley which are sold both within the Nakuru town and other towns and trading centers of Nakuru. The harvest provides enough raw materials to the manufacturing industries such as the grain ginners and the flour milling industries.
Other farming activities in Nakuru County include cattle keeping which provides milk to the milk processing plants in Nakuru and Kenya as well.
The County is also a prominent tourism destination that hosts tourists from all corners of the world all year round. People come and visit the county and engage in various tourism activities which include visiting the stunning Nakuru Lake for the sighting of both greater and lesser flamingo birds that reside on the shore of the Lake.
Because of the various treasure attraction that is found within Nakuru County, tourists visiting the Nakuru County can participate and engage in various activities such as the guided hiking safaris, camping, game viewing, community walks or cultural tours and the prominent bird watching activity that are more adventurous and so exciting for the visitors.
Nakuru County is also famous for harboring all 500 species of birds that do stay at various lakes and water waters found with the Nakuru County in addition to harboring over 56 species of mammals that are found in the various reserved and game parks within the Nakuru County. Some of these include both black and white rhinos that are protected within Lake Nakuru National park. Other animals include lions, Impalas, Buffaloes among others.
Visitors’ interest in accessing the beautiful lake Nakuru nation Park will have to use three entrances gated into the park which include the Lake Nakuru Manin gate, Lake Nakuru Main gate Lenat gat, and the Lake Nakuru Nderit gate.
Other than Lake Nakuru National Park, there is also Hell Gate national park found in Nakuru County, and other places of interest include Menengai crater and Lake Naivasha that are important tourist attractions found within the county.
Another Important tourist attraction that is so prominent in Nakuru County is the prominent soda lake, Lake Nakuru which is found in Lake Nakuru National Park and this park is famous as the resident for the flamingoes because of the presence of the blue algae that feeds the flamingoes birds. Lake Nakuru National Park is one of the best scenery National Park in Kenya found in central Kenya on the great east African rift valley west of Nairobi covering area of 188 square kilometers.
Lake Nakuru National Park is fenced with an electric fence and this was done to protect the endangered and the rare white and black rhinos that protected within the park against the poachers and the encroachers.
Fencing the park also yielded the results as the animals cannot migrate from one place to another and this gives a chance for the visitors to enjoy a lot of animals without moving or driving for long distances while within the park. Lake Nakuru National Park has over 400 species of birds and over 50 mammals’ species which are found within the park.
In Nakuru County, Lake Nakuru National Park is the most visited national park or destination and this has made Nakuru County collect enough revenue for the park which has supplemented its budget. The park is managed and run by the Kenyan Wildlife Services and thus all the services and activities, as well as the attractions within the park, are handled by the Kenyan Wildlife Services.
