Volcanoes national park is the old park to be gazzetted in Rwanda in 1925. The Park is located in the northwestern part of the country near Musanze town. The Park is famous for hosting endangered mountain gorillas without others found in Virunga national park DR Congo, Mgahinga national park, and Bwindi impenetrable forest national park in Uganda. The Park is not only a home of mountain gorillas but also hosts 5 out of 8 Virunga massif volcanoes- Sabyinyo, Bisoke, Gahinga, Karisimbi, and Muhabura. The Park is also a home of primates such as black and white colobus monkeys, golden monkeys, l’hoet’s monkeys, owl-faced monkeys, dent’s monkeys, blue monkeys as well as vervet monkeys.

Volcanoes national park is a home to home to more than 480 bird species with 100 of them not found anywhere in Rwanda while 16 of them are only endemic to volcanoes in Virunga ranges of the mountains. Best time to trek mountain gorillas in Rwanda

Mountain gorilla trekking in volcanoes national park Rwanda can be done at any time of the year but some months are better than the rest. dry months of June to September and December to February are the best times to visit the park because there is little or no rainfall, the roads leading to the park are accessible and the trekking trails are dry and passable. Visiting the park in the rainy season is also okay but the roads to the park are impassable and the trekking trails are muddy and slippery.

Rwanda offers the most expensive luxury gorilla trekking of all gorilla national parks. Rwanda gorilla permits in volcanoes national park cost $1500 per person per trek. Children below the age of 15 years are not allowed to trek gorillas for different reasons and also people with infectious diseases such as flu, cough, and diarrhea.

Golden monkey trekking

Golden monkey involves walking up early and move to Kinigi park headquarters for a briefing about the rules and regulations of the trekking. After the briefing, an armed ranger leads you through hiking on different trails in search of golden monkeys. When you allocate the golden monkeys, you will be allowed to spend a maximum of one hour with them in their natural habitats. watch them hunt food, play, breastfeed among others. Golden monkey trekking is not as difficult as gorilla trekking because they don’t shift every day making new nests so this makes them be easily found.
