Day 1. Arusha to Lake Manayara National Park.

You will be picked up from your Tanzanian lodge or hotel and driven over the Great Rift Valley to Lake Manyara National Park. Its name comes from the Maasai word for “euphorbia tirucalli,” a wild bush that is used to build a thorny hedge to protect their cattle, locally known as a boma, and which has rich vegetation and tropical forests of giant fig trees and mahogany trees. This little-known national park is home to herds of elephants, buffalo, Masai giraffes, zebras, and other antelopes. There are also numerous species of monkeys and a sizable population of hippos that live in the lake and explore the surrounding area. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the fabled tree climbing lions of Lake Manyara National Park, famed for their tree climbing proclivities, quietly relaxing on the limbs of an “Acacia tortilis” tree. Flamingos, pelicans, hornbills, and a variety of woodland species are among the plentiful bird species. Your driver will transport you to a lodge in Karatu for dinner and the night in the late afternoon. Spend the night at Eileen’s Tree Inn in Karatu. Dinner and a packed lunch are included.

Day 2. Lake Manyara National Park to Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, you go to Serengeti, one of the most well-known wildlife protection areas in the world, through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Malanja Depression. As your guide works through the paperwork, you will first stop briefly at the Naabi Hill Gate so that you can have a little stroll among the Naabi Hill Kopjes (giant granite boulders). The huge Serengeti National Park, named after the old Masai word “Siringet,” which roughly translates to “endless plains,” continues to offer game drives all day after lunch at the picnic area near the gate. The prairies are truly infinite. Spend the night at Osinon Serengeti Camp in Central Serengeti’s Seronera. Included are all meals.

Day 3. Drive from Serengeti National Park to Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Early-morning Serengeti game drive, with optional visits to the hippo pools and Seronera Visitor Center. After a filling breakfast in the bush camp, you’ll continue your Serengeti game drives by returning to Naabi Hill Gate until early afternoon, when you’ll cross back over to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and make your way to your lodge for supper and the night. The Eileen’s Tree Inn, a beautiful mid-range lodge in Karatu, will serve as our home base for the night. Included are all meals.

Day 4. Explore Ngorongoro and, thereafter, return to Arusha.

Following an early breakfast, you check in again at the Loduare Main Gate before entering the crater for a spectacular game drive (during which a picnic lunch is supplied) at a selected picnic location. You may expect to view numerous creatures up close, including lions, zebras, hippos, elephants, jackals, rhinos, and many other antelopes, as well as flamingos, many birds, and other species, because relatively few animals migrate in and out of the Ngorongoro Crater with its roughly 2000-foot-high walls.
