Mubare Gorilla Group- Bwindi impenetrable forest national park has 20 habituated gorilla families that can be trekked at any time of the year by tourists. The park is a home to more than a half of the surviving mountain gorillas in the whole world. Mubare mountain gorilla family is one of the group’s you can trek in the Buhoma sector of Bwindi impenetrable forest national.
Mubare mountain gorilla family was the first gorilla family to be habituated in 1991 and the family was open for trekking in 1993. The group had only 19 members at the time of habituation but the members kept on changing due to newborn babies, death, or breakaway.
Mubare mountain gorilla group can be trekked from the Buhoma sector of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park, the group gets its name from Mubare hills in Bwindi national park where the group was first spotted by ranges. The group has 12 members at the time of habituation but the number reduced to 5 after the dominating silverback had died.
Silverback Ruhondeza died in 2013 after sustaining serious injuries during a fight with a strong black back from an unhabituated gorilla family and he was founded dead in the morning in June 2012. He was 50 years. Those who visit Buhoma sector have an opportunity of seeing his grave.
Mubare mountain gorilla family is now dominated by one silverback Kanyonyi who expanded the family from 5 to 9 members after Ruhondeza’s death. Numbers in gorilla families always keep changing due to many reasons so the above-given number is not constant.
Other Gorilla families in Buhoma sector in Bwindi
Buhoma sector is situated in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National park. This sector is located in Kanungu district and is the most amazing and easiest sector for gorilla trekking, the good this about Buhoma sector is that it’s a home of the first gorilla family to be habituated and trekked first in Bwindi Impenetrable National park and it’s called Mubare gorilla group. Rushegura Gorilla Family
This is a big gorilla family in Buhoma sector with 15 gorilla individuals consisting of 4 black back, 3 juveniles, 4 adult females, 4 infants and these are under the leadership of Alpha Kabukojo. This family was habituated in 2000 and they received the first trekker in 2002 after splitting from Habinyanja Gorilla Family and it takes 3-5 hours to trek Rushegura Gorilla Family.
Habinyanja Gorilla Family
This is an amazing family with 17 members made up of 1 silverback. The name Habinyanja is derived from a Rukiga word Nyanja meaning a place of water and this refers to a place where its members were first spotted during the habituation process which started in 1997 and then ended in 1999. Trekking Habinyanja Gorilla Family takes you 5 hours or even a whole day of trekking.
Gorilla permits
There are only 8 gorilla permits sold a day to trek this gorilla group and you are advised to book your gorilla permit 3-4 months in advance to have an hour around mountain gorillas as they do their day to day activities. Gorilla permits go for $700 foreign non-residents, 600 foreign residents and ugx 250,000 East African citizens.
