Bweza gorilla group / family can be trekked from Rushaga sector of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park, Rushaga sector is found in the southern part of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park. Rushaga gorilla family is named after the dominating silverback Bweza who broke away from Nshongi gorilla family to form his own in 2012.

It was always investable for Nshongi mountain gorilla family to break because it was the largest gorilla family in Bwindi with several silverbacks. The family is comprised of 12 members made of 2 silverbacks, 4 black backs, 2 infants, 3 females, and a sub-adult gorilla.

Nshongi gorilla family

Nshongi mountain gorilla is the family in which Bweza gorilla family was formed. Nshongi was the largest habituated mountain gorilla family in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park but the family split when Mishaya broke away to form Mishaya broke away to form Mishaya group and Bweza also followed after years.

Rushaga sector of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park also gives tourists an opportunity of joining researchers and trackers in the process of habituating mountain gorillas. Gorilla habituation also gives tourists a chance of taking more clear photos because you get to spend four hours with mountain gorillas instead of gorilla trekking that takes only an hour.

Gorilla permits for Bweza Gorilla Group

Mountain gorilla trekking permits can be obtained from the Uganda wildlife authority or through a trusted tour operator, a Ugandan gorilla permit costs $700 for foreign nonresidents, $600 foreign residents, and shs250,000 East African citizens. Gorilla habituation in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi national park costs $15000 per person per trek. People under the ages of 15 and those with communicable diseases such as flu, cough, and diarrhea will not be allowed to trek.

What to bring for Bweza Gorilla Group trekking

Gorilla trekking not only needs one to be physically fit but also requires one to carry the right trekking equipment such as good waterproof hiking shoes, garden gloves, enough drinking water, energy-giving snacks, insect repellents, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, good quality camera, long-sleeved clothes and much more

Best time to visit Bweza Gorilla Group

Bweza gorilla family can be visited at any time of the year but some months are better than the rest. The best time to trek Bweza gorilla family is during the dry season which occurs from June to September and December to January. It’s during these months that the roads are accessible and the trails in the park are dry. The vegetation is also not too thick making it easy to spot mountain gorillas.
