About the Masai Mara National Reserve

Masai Mara National Reserve is the biggest protected area that is located in the Narok sub-county and it is majorly run by the local community people of the Masai Narok sub-county which is different from other national parks and game reserves that are managed by the Kenya Wildlife Services.

The National Reserve was named Masai Mara to honor the local people of the Masai who occupied this land because even they used to occupy the land that is currently occupied by the National Reserve. It is believed even that it is the people of the Masai called the Masai who describes the topographical land of the  National Reserve as the Mara which means looked from far.

The Park is one of the fastest growing protected areas in Africa and it was first established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1961 and later gazetted as the National Reserve in the year 1997 and the moment, the Reserve covers about 1,510 square kilometers.

The National Reserve is now managed by the Trans Mara County Council which was organized and started in the western part of the Masai but before that, it was managed by the Narok council and now and when the conservancy was formed they took the management of the Mara Triangle.
