From a simple and original proposal by KWS and the Hell’s Gate National Park action group in 2009 to become the World’s Wildest Race, it is only in Kenya that such an event is held within a protected area, which is very interesting.
Where does the wheelbarrow race event take place in Kenya?
The world’s wheelbarrow race takes place within the Hells Gate National Park. The park hosts the “To Hell’s Gate on a Wheelbarrow Race,” which brings together environmentalists, adventurers, spectators, visitors, and wildlife officials from throughout the country.
On a Friday afternoon, the wonderful journey begins. Teams come from all across the country, and even the world, to camp in the park. Nonetheless, fans and tourists who simply want to watch the race can do so on race day. The teams pitch tents and watch a movie in the evening as they set up on Friday afternoon. The wheelbarrow race is the primary event on Saturday.
The real feel of the Hells Gate Park wheelbarrow race
This is not a race for the faint of heart. As the spectators run, push, yell, pant, sing, and waddle to the finish line, the uneven track saps their vitality. One person sits in the wheelbarrow while the others must push it through puddles, grass, and cough their way through the dusty track. The male and female team members of the quickest individual team each get Sh15000. The second and third place teams each receive a prize, with the top children’s team taking home Sh4000. In addition, the team with the most colorful wheelbarrow will be awarded Sh10,000.
The wheelbarrow races have only three stages, which are as follows: The Elite Race is 7 kilometers long, the Corporate Race is 5 kilometers long, and the Children’s Race is 500 meters long. Following that, business teams engage in volleyball matches, and a guided tour of the Olkaria Geothermal Power Station is offered. The Wheelbarrow Race is a unique and entertaining fundraising event that combines one of Kenya’s most difficult athletic activities, the wheelbarrow race, with The Wheelbarrow Race’s major goal is to generate funds for the construction of a fully equipped conservation education center that will be used to mobilize people and increase awareness about wildlife and other conservation concerns in the Naivasha ecosystem.
A worthy reward will be awarded to the winning team and the finest pimped wheelbarrow. Corporate groups will participate in a corporate team-building challenge to demonstrate their strength in dealing with social and wildlife conservation concerns. During the event, there will also be a corporate volleyball tournament, 2-night camping, and a wild bush party! There will be kid-friendly activities planned for the kids!
Hells Gate National Park is only a few kilometers from Naivasha National Park, and visitors will only need to drive for about fourteen kilometers from the Nairobi-Naivasha highway.
