Rwanda gorilla groups- There are 10 habituated gorilla families in volcanoes national park. Volcanoes national park Rwanda offers the most luxurious gorilla trekking with permits being the most expensive at $1500 compared to $700 of Uganda and $450 of DR Congo. Mountains gorillas can’t survive in zoos and this is a reason you need to travel to Africa if you want to meet eye to eye with human closest relatives.

Volcanoes national park has 10 habituated mountain gorilla families that are open for trekking by tourists and only eight gorilla permits are allocated to each gorilla family per day. For mountain gorillas to get fully habituated they go through a period of 2-3 years before they can be open for tourism by tourists.

Ugenda mountain gorilla group is made up of 11 members among which include 2 silverbacks. The word Ugenda in Kinyarwanda means mobile which partly relates to this group’s mobility. These mountain gorillas are always mobile in that they are always on the move and can’t settle in one place for long making it difficult for people to trek this group. This gorilla group can be trekked on the slopes of mountain Bisoke.

Mountain gorillas are giant and gentle apes but when they are insecure, they become extremely aggressive a reason you need to follow the gorilla trekking rules and regulations as taught to you at the briefing Centre while around mountain gorillas

Gorilla trekking permits

Gorilla trekking permits in Rwanda costs $1500 per person per trek and only people ages 15 and above are allowed to trek mountain gorillas. Once the allocated gorilla family is met, they will be given one hour to stay around these gorillas as they learn more about their habits and behaviors as well as watching them do daily activities as they take photos. You are advised to book your gorilla permits 3-4 months in advance due to high demand most especially in the peak season.

Before trekking in volcanoes national park Rwanda, you need to attend a short briefing that should enlighten you on the dos and don’ts of mountain gorilla trekking. The briefing is also a perfect platform to air out any questions that you might need to ask hence, don’t fear to ask out those questions. After briefing, you will be accompanied by an armed safari ranger for protection as you search for any Rwanda gorilla groups

Best time to visit Rwanda gorilla groups

Volcanoes national park can be visited at any time of the year given that the vegetation at volcanoes national park is mainly composed of bamboo giving you clear views of mountain gorillas. The best time to visit Rwanda for gorilla trekking is the dry season of June to September and December to February when the trekking trails are not muddy and slippery.

What to pack for gorilla trekking?

One must bear in mind that the weather of Rwanda is unpredictable let it be in the dry season so you need to come prepared with hiking gear such as waterproof hiking boots, rain jackets, long-sleeved clothes, enough drinking water, energy-giving snacks, garden gloves, and insect repellents.

Volcanoes national park is home to four out of eight Virunga range volcanoes, you can combine your gorilla safari with a hike to the top of any of the mountains giving you stunning views of the surroundings and the park’s wildlife.
