Lemosho Route to the Peak of Kilimanjaro

Lemosho Route to the Peak of Kilimanjaro

Lemosho Route to the Peak of Kilimanjaro

Lemosho Route to the Peak of Kilimanjaro Mountain; In comparison to the other mountain climbing routes, the Lemosho is a relatively new route that climbers use to hike up to the top of the Kilimanjaro Mountain, and it has been used and preferred by the majority of climbers or trekkers. The Lemosho trekking route begins on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro at the well-known Londorossi gate, and it was introduced as an alternative to the Shira route, which begins at a higher, more difficult, but more beautiful altitude. The Londorossi gate is not a tiresome excursion from the town of Moshi, and it is relatively far from Arusha town. Once you have arrived at the entrance, you will first register with the authorities and then be driven a further 12 kilometers to the starting point, where you will begin your outstanding travel adventure to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The western side of Kilimanjaro is still fairly wild, and you might see a huge antelope, buffalo, or even an elephant if you’re lucky. The Lemosho Route joins the Machame Route at Lava Tower and follows the Southern Circuit down to Barranco Valley (see map below). Trekkers on the Lemosho Route, like those on the Machame Route, must traverse the Barranco Wall before summiting from Barafu Camp. Remember that the Mweka path is the most commonly used as well as the descent route to the Kilimanjaro mountains.

Most trekkers finish the Lemosho Route in eight days. However, some tour operators offer seven-day treks and six-day hikes on the Lemosho (both of which are not recommended). The eight-day change is ideal for acclimatization and, of course, increases the chances of success (see Kilimanjaro success rates). Both Shira Camp 1 and Shira Camp 2 are typical overnight stops on the 7-day itinerary. Eight-day hikes return to Karanga Camp for another day of acclimatization. So it will depend on the time you have and how best you plan with your tour operator, like the Africa adventure vacation.

The Lemosho safari journey/itinerary

The Lemosho Route to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro starts far western flank. From Moshi, it takes about 2 hours to reach Londorossi Gate (2,100 meters), and it takes longer from Arusha. You will register with the Kilimanjaro National Park authorities at the gate before being carried to the starting spot, which is a further 12 kilometers from Londorossi. During the rainy season (April-May), the track may be impassable to automobiles, forcing you to walk the final few kilometers to the starting site. Most tour operators serve lunch (2,820 m). In this part of the mountain, enormous species such as elephants and buffalo can be seen, and you’ll almost certainly be escorted by an armed guide in case one of the big five gets too close for comfort! When you arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, dinner will be provided.

Hiking mount Kilimanjaro using Lemosho Route to the Peak of Kilimanjaro

On day two, you will explore Mti Mkubwa camp at about 2820 meters and Shira camp, which is at about 3500 meters. The distance here is about 8 kilometers, with a trekking time of about 5 to 6 hours. The second day begins with a gentle climb through the last stretches of the rainforest zone before becoming steeper as you approach the low alpine moorland zone. The trip to Shira Camp 1, which is located on the western border of the Shira Plateau and is just over 8 kilometers from your starting location, is reasonably short and easy.

On day three, you will explore Shira Camp 1 at 3500 meters and then climb for about 14 kilometers, which is equivalent to 5 to 7 hours, up to Moir Hut, which is at 4200 meters. From Shira Camp 1, continue hiking across and up the Shira plateau to Shira Camp 2, which is located at 3,850 meters. While enjoying amazing views across the valley below and the Western Breach of Kilimanjaro above, you will join hikers from the Machame Route. Because the plateau is exposed, expect strong winds and temperatures below zero in the early morning. You then proceed up the Shira Caldera to Moir Hut via an off-the-beaten path. Today is a long day with a high-altitude finish. You may begin to experience symptoms of altitude sickness. Make sure you keep a close eye on yourself. Getting a good night’s sleep now will pay off later in your journey.

On day 4, you will move to Moir Hut (4200 meters), to Larva Tower (4600 meters), and then to Barranco Camp, which is at 3900 meters. On day four, you’ll travel across a desert-like landscape to Lava Tower and the Shark’s Tooth formation at 4,600 meters. You’ll eat lunch at Lava Tower before starting the Southern Circuit route (see map above), which descends to Barranco Camp, 3,900 meters, where you’ll spend the night at a similar elevation to the previous night. An effective way to acclimate the body to altitude is to climb high and sleep down.

On day five, the Barranco ‘Breakfast’ climb, a 257-meter scramble up the Barranco Wall, will be shown to you. As you climb the cliff to the top of the Karanga Valley, be prepared to use all four limbs. From here, you’ll take a path to Karanga Camp that takes you through various inclines and valleys (3,960 meters). This will be your overnight camp for people on an eight-day hike. Seven-day trekkers will stop here for a quick lunch break before continuing to the Mweka path and Barafu Camp via the arid desert terrain (4,680 meters).

The sixth day is a pretty short and simple hike. Starting at Karanga Camp, the trail immediately joins the Mweka route and ascends to Barafu at 4,680 meters, the base camp. We urge that you take advantage of the easy day to take in the sights, recover your body, and mentally prepare for the summit push.

Day seven begins with hot tea, biscuits, and a long, zigzagging climb up the thick scree that covers Kibo’s high slopes. It’s a long and difficult journey. To get to the crater rim, you’ll have to dig deep and keep a continuous pace. After roughly 4-6 hours of climbing, you’ll arrive at Stella Point (5,739 meters), where you may rest and watch the sunrise over the Tanzanian landscape. It’s an excellent idea to drink some hot tea or hot chocolate at this point because you’ll need the energy to walk around and up the crater rim to Uhuru Peak for another 1-2 hours (5,895 meters). Always remember to keep going forward, one step at a time. Over 60% of climbers come to a halt at Stella Point, but the majority can make it to the summit if they find the mental strength to press on. If you have severe AMS symptoms, you should descend right away.

Spend some time at Uhuru Peak as you take photos

Spend some time at Uhuru Peak as you take photos

The time you spend at Uhuru Peak will be limited. Take as many photos as you can, revel in your achievement, and then return to Stella Point. Many trekkers descend Kibo’s scree slopes to Barafu Camp, where you can have a break before continuing to Mweka Camp (3,100 meters). On day 5, you will be trekking for between 12 and 16 hours, so you must keep a steady pace and stay hydrated.

On day 8, which is probably the last day, you will move from Mweka camp (3,100 meters) to Mweka Gate (1640 meters). The final day on the mountain is short, but it is still exhausting because your body will be tired and your knees will be aching from the previous day’s descent. As you approach Mweka Gate, take it slowly and take in the beautiful jungle environment (1,640 meters). You must sign out with the authorities and receive your certificate, either for Stella Point or for Uhuru Peak, at the gate. It is traditional to tip your hiking team before returning to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
