Karera Waterfalls – A natural wonder nestled in the southeast: One of Burundi’s most enchanting natural treasures is the Karera Waterfalls, also called Chutes de la Karera, which are tucked away in the verdant surroundings of Rutana Province in the southeast. For tourists looking for peace and adventure, these tiered cascades are a must-see since they provide a calm getaway into nature.

The Karera Waterfalls are situated close to the small town of Musongati and in Rutana Province in southeast Burundi, about 60 kilometers south of Rutana town. They can be reached by road from Gitega or Bujumbura; however, the final stretch to the falls could requirean off-road vehicle.

Particularly during the wet season, the main waterfall in the Karera complex creates a spectacular water cascade with a plunge of roughly 80 meters (260 feet). The entire waterfall system is one of the biggest and most striking natural attractions in this country, spanning an area of over 142 hectares.

Arera Waterfalls isn’t just one drop; it’s an array of several waterfalls. The Mwaro and Karera rivers are its two main sources of water.

The water is tiered because it runs across three main layers.

The waterfall system consists of six different branches, or streams of water, that cascade and swirl over dense vegetation and rocks.

The natural basins and ponds created by this tiered fall at different levels are popular for leisure, swimming, and photography.

Beauty in Nature

Dense gallery forests with tall trees, including Pericopsis angolensis, Parinari curatellifolia, and Neutonia buchanii, around Karera Waterfalls. The ecological diversity of the region is boosted by the variety of bird species that are supported by this lush vegetation.

Attractions & Activities

Swimming

Natural pools created by the tumbling streams of water may be seen at the base of the waterfalls. Particularly after a hike, these pools created are ideal for a cool swim.

-The waters from the falls are calm, clear, cool and beautiful, surrounded by green vegetation, offering a high-serenity environment.

-The dry season from June to September is the best time to swim since the water is calm and easily accessible.

-Although swimming is permitted, there aren’t many safety precautions, so it’s best to check the water levels and the waves with a guide.

Hiking the falls

There are several hiking paths to Karera Waterfalls, differing in length and challenge.

You may see the falls from a variety of heights and perspectives thanks to trails that lead to the waterfall system’s many levels.

-While some trails provide spectacular scenic views of the Rutana hills and valleys, others lead through deep forest areas.

Canopy Walkway

Although the path was constructed with safety in mind, those who are afraid of heights should take caution.

Since it’s still a relatively new feature, it could only be accessible with a guide or during specific seasons.

There are designated picnic areas in the park, offering guests a tranquil place to relax and enjoy the environment.

These places are usually found close to trailheads or viewpoints and are shaded.

You have the option to pack meals with local guides or neighboring lodges, or you may bring your own food.

It’s a wonderful way to get away and enjoy the forest’s natural beauty and wild sounds.

Reminder: To conserve the environment, bring recyclable containers and take all of your waste with you after your trip.

Ideal Time to visit Karera waterfalls

The best time visit Karera falls is the during the dry season (June to September) although the waterfalls can be visited all year round.

– The Karera falls are great for hiking and exploring

-trails are always dry trails is safe to walk.

-Easier road access, which is crucial for 4×4 vehicles.

-Since seasonal rains continue to fall, waterfalls continue to flow well.

The place is perfect for outdoor activities like swimming, hiking, and picnics without the disruption of heavy rainfall.

The most scenic period is the rainy season (October to January).

-The waterfalls are at their fullest and most spectacular waterfalls

-Dense vegetation and beautiful surroundings

– At this time, roads are muddy and trails might be slick.

-During periods of wet season, or rainy season, some areas  could be not easily accessible

Ideal place for nature lovers and photographers, but not the best for hiking unless you’re prepared and experienced.

Getting to Karera falls

There isn’t much public transportation in southeast Burundi, so you’ll need to prepare for a little adventure to get to the Karera Waterfalls.

Tips to get to Karara falls:

By road transport (Suggested)

To go to the Karera falls from Bujumbura by ground means:  drive about 60 kilometers southeast to the village of Musongati in Rutana Province. From there, follow the signage or local directions. Due to the hard gravel road in the latter portion of the trip, a 4×4 or high-clearance vehicle is recommended.

From Gitega: From Mwaro, drive south toward the town, and then continue on a rough road for almost 4 km to the falls. A rough ride should be expected, particularly during the wet season.

Motorcycle (Moto)

You may take a motorbike or a taxi to the falls if you’re in Gitega or Rutana. The ride may be an enjoyable opportunity to experience the local environment and provides a more direct path. Be mindful to negotiate over the price in advance.

Information for Visitors

Entrance fee: To support conservation efforts, a little fee is collected upon arrival.

Amenities: There are basic facilities provided, however guests are urged to pack necessities like water, food, and suitable footwear.

Guides: To add to the experience, local guides who are knowledgeable about the history and ecology of the area are offered.

1. The Ruvyironza River, Source of the White Nile

Situated approximately 50 kilometers from Karera in Rutovu, Bururi Province

3. Ruvubu National Park

-Situated in northeastern part of Bujumbura the capital city of Burundi, a few hours away from Karera (a more extensive journey)

Why visit Ruvubu National Park: With its diverse ecological sysytem of about 200 bird species, buffaloes, antelopes, hippos, and monkeys, it’s Burundi’s largest national park.

Experience: Excellent for guided game drives and nature hikes and birding, although it takes at least a day to reach there from the Karera falls.
