You are advised to book your gorilla trekking permits in advance of 3-4 months before arriving in the country to trek or else you might get disappointed and go back without trekking mountain gorillas because of the permits will not be available.

Mountain gorilla trekking has also become difficult because it comes at a cost, some budget travelers cannot trek gorillas simply because the permits are expensive most especially in Rwanda where the permit is bought at a fee of $1500 per person per trek.

Mountain gorilla trekking has also become difficult for children below the age of 15 years because they are not allowed to trek these giant apes, very old people might also find it hard hiking but they have options of being carried with a sedan chair or traditional bamboo carrier which is better but at an affordable price.

Cost of gorilla trekking permits in Rwanda and Uganda- Rwanda increased its permits for gorilla trekking from USD700 to $1500 per person per trek. Uganda gorilla trekking permits cost $700 for foreign nonresidents, $600 foreign residents, and shs250,000 East African citizens.

Location of a gorilla family/ group

The location of a mountain gorilla family in any of the gorilla national parks in Rwanda and Uganda also plays a huge role in determining the ease of trekking gorillas. how near or far a gorilla family has moved since it was last trekked, will determine how difficult or easy it will be for trekkers to trek that specific gorilla group. Some mountain gorilla families are always on the move and live in the high altitudes of the mountains, thus making it difficult for visitors to trek the gorillas in these groups. Trekking mountain gorillas can take 2-7 hours of tracking depending on the location of the gorilla family.

Best time of the year for trekking

How difficult is it for visitors to trek mountain gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda also depends on the time of the year that one has chosen to trek gorillas? most of the tourists are advised to travel between June to September and December to February when there is little or no rainfall. When you trek mountain gorillas in the rainy season, you will experience a lot of difficulties when trekking mountain gorillas since the hiking trails are muddy, steep, and slippery at this time of the year.
