Mount Kilimanjaro, which was constructed around three million years ago (about the time the East African Rift Valley was created), is made up of three separate cones: Kibo, Shira, and Mawenzi. The mountain is the subject of many myths and stories. Some claim that mountain gorillas previously resided in the forests on the mountain’s lower slopes. The Pygmies, according to the Chagga people, are still present in the remote caves and ravines on the mountainsides. Some of the local tribes even held the pale tint of the snow covering the mountain to be the throne of God. Even now, the meaning and derivation of the name Kilimanjaro are unknown. Although many of the indigenous tribes, including the Wakamba and Kikuyu, gave the names of the mountains, it is thought that the mountain’s original name originated with the Swahili-speaking traders who lived in Mombasa.
