Buhoma sector is one of the 4 gorilla trekking sectors in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park a home to more than half of the remaining total population of mountain gorillas surviving in Africa. Buhoma sector of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is home to our gorilla families namely Mubare gorilla family, Habinyanja gorilla family, Katwe gorilla family, and Rushengura gorilla family. The sector having 4 gorilla families means that there are 32 gorilla permits every day at this sector because only 8 people are allowed to trek a single gorilla family a day.

Buhoma sector was the first place where gorilla trekking started from in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park in 1993 when the Mubare gorilla family was opened for trekking. The sector is located in the northern part of Bwindi with a lower altitude compared to other trekking sectors making gorilla trekking in this region strenuous.

The cost of gorilla permits in the Buhoma sector is the same as other regions of the park, a permit costs $700 foreign nonresidents, $600 foreign residents, and shs250,000 East African citizens.

What is the best time to visit Buhoma sector for gorilla trekking

Trekking mountain gorillas in Buhoma sector can be done at any time of the year though the best time is during the dry season which happens in June to September and December to February. The dry season is known as the peak season and tourists prefer coming to the country in the dry season because during this period there is less or no rainfall in the forest meaning that the gorilla trails and roads leading to the park are accessible compared to the rainy season when the park receives heavy rainfall which makes making the trails muddy and slippery hence making gorilla trekking difficult.

How to get to Buhoma sector

Buhoma sector is located in the northern side of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and can be accessed by road transport from Entebbe/Kampala via Masaka Mbarara, Kabale then Buhoma which takes about 9-10 hours. Using air transport, you can book a flight from Kajjansi airstrip or Entebbe international airport to Kihihi airstrip.
