Lake Tanganyika is the second deepest lake in the world after Lake Baikal in Siberia and the second biggest freshwater lake by volume. Its greatest depth is 1,470 meters, and its capacity is approximately 18,880 cubic kilometers. Lake Tanganyika has a maximum length of 673 km and a maximum width of 72 km. Its total area is 32,893 square kilometers.

Four nations—Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)—share the lake; Tanzania owns 41% and the RDC 45%.
