These southern white rhinos were re-introduced in Uganda in 2005 after a long time without any rhinos in the country. A non-profit organization is working hand in hand with the Uganda Wildlife Authority to protect and increase the population of these animals.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place in Uganda where southern white rhinos can be observed in their natural habitats. The area was gazetted in 2002 covering over 70 sq. km to be a home to the white rhinos which were to be reintroduced in the country. In 20025, 4 rhinos were reintroduced from Kenya while 2 were donated by Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida USA.

Rhino tracking is the most done activity carried out in Ziwa rhino sanctuary in Nakasongola district. The sanctuary has other activities like bird watching, shoebill trekking, and nature walks. All these activities are organized to enable tourists get to see the different attractions that are said to be in the sanctuary.

Rhinos tracking experience in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Rhino tracking in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is done all through the day at any time the tourists come. Rangers teach tourists the rules and regulations of the activity for the safety of animals and the people themselves during the activity. Armed ranger guides are later assigned to lead the tourists in the wild where they start to search for animals.

To locate the southern white rhinos it doesn’t take so long for they live freely around the gazetted area. It can take 1 hour or even less to see the rhinos in their natural habitat doing day to day activities. When located, tourists are given time to learn about their behaviors and watch them carry out daily activities mostly grazing.

As tourists search and observe southern white rhinos in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, they have chances to meet different mammals, primates, and birders that live within the place. Animals include the waterbucks, leopards, oribis, bushbucks, and a few monkey species among others.

Tourists who are interested in seeing birds are able to see some of the bird species recorded there which include the Abyssinian ground hornbill, Great blue turaco, African hawk eagle, knob-bellied duck, steppe eagle, levaillant’s cuckoo, red-bellied fire finch, and African fish eagle among others.

Seeing rhinos in Uganda is very affordable to all kinds of tourists who are really interested in meeting them in the wild. Tourists only need park entrance fees and rhino tracking fees to see them in the wild. The fee is paid at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary entrance gate using MasterCard, visa, MTN, or Airtel mobile money.

The entrance fee to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is $20 for foreign non-residents, and foreign residents while citizens of East African Member states pay UGX10,000 only. Rhino tracking goes for $25 for foreign non-residents, $20 for foreign residents, and UGX20,000 citizens of East African member states.

Best time to see rhinos in Uganda

In Uganda, southern white rhinos are found in Ziwa rhino sanctuary a place that can be visited all throughout the year. Even though Ziwa is open for visitations all throughout the year, the dry season from June to September and December to February is the best time to visit the place and see the rhinos because there is little rainfall and plenty of sunshine.

In the dry season, the walking trails around the sanctuary are dry and easier to move through which allows tourists to access most of the areas in the gazetted place. The vegetation is short and scattered which allows tourists to have a clear view of the different rhinos and other tourist attractions.

Tourists can still use the rainy season to go see southern white rhinos in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. This season is not the best time cause of the bad weather characterized by plenty of rainfall and little sunshine. The walking trails are muddy limiting tourists from accessing some areas while the vegetation is tall giving unclear views of some rhinos.

How to access Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to see rhinos

Tourists can only access Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary by road transport in just 3 hours. The santuray is found in Nakasongola district along Kampala Gulu highway. From Entebbe, tourists go through Kampala, Bombo, Wobulenzi, Luwero, and Nakasongola where the sanctuary is found.
