Virunga National Park Safaris
Virunga National Park, originally known as Albert National Park, borders the Rwenzori Mountains and Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda to the north and the Virunga Mountains to the south, encompassing 7,800 square kilometers of rainforest. This Virunga National Park is located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s eastern region. Because of its remarkable diversity in nature, heritage, and ecological boundaries, Virunga was one of the first protected areas to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The ICCN (Institut Congolais for la Conservation de la Nature) manages Virunga, Congo’s national park authorities, and the Virunga Foundation, a UK-based organization that was previously known as the African Conservation Foundation. The park provides an excellent African safari experience.
There are various attractions, including mountain gorilla trekking, golden monkeys, chimps, and Lulimbi District fauna, birds, flora, and unknown natural routes. The area is culturally rich and may appeal to a population of African safari aficionados who wish to visit.
Virunga National Park is well-known for its mountain gorillas, but it is also a wonderful spot to watch animals and should be visited at least once on your Virunga safaris. The wildlife in Virunga is primarily in the park’s Lulimbi division, and this includes forest elephants, things you can view on your forest excursion, lions, buffaloes, kob, elands, and antelope species such as okapis on a good day, and lions when they are found. The Lulimbi area is bordered by Lake Edward, which is famed for being home to Africa’s largest hippopotamus. You should bring binoculars because guided safari treks allow you to see crocodiles and birds.
Accessing Virunga National Park Safari
The most popular modes of transportation to Virunga National Park are air and water. Virunga National Park is located in the city of Goma and can be reached by land or sea, depending on your preferences and location.
By land, visitors fly into Rwanda’s Kigali International Airport, then drive five hours west on a paved road through the Gisenyi Goma border into the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the Virunga tourist office is strategically located. To ensure the safety of guests, the transfer from the Grande Passage to the park will be coordinated by the tour operator or Virunga and will be strictly accompanied by a convoy of Virunga security officials. It also takes roughly 15 minutes to drive from Goma International Airport to the Grande Passage border building. The Goma International Airport, where Ethiopian Airlines lands once a week, has been extensively damaged by the lava flow from the 2002 eruption of Mount Nyiragongo. Return flights from Goma are normally 7 days later, so if your safari is short, it is best to fly back to Kigali. Please keep in mind that these two nearby nations require different visas.
The Bunagana border between Uganda and Congo is located near the Bunagana border, but it is not accessible for excursions to Virunga National Park or the 2-day Jomba Community Safari Package. The water option applies to visitors traveling from Bukavu/Kahuzibiega National Park. A speedboat voyage of three hours from Bukavu to Goma, where you can join a Virunga Safari.
A mountain gorilla trekking safari is available in Virunga. A close encounter with chimps in the Mafura Forest; a safari walk in the Lulimbi area; a trip up Mount Nyiragongo in a group of around 20 people; or a nature walk in the park’s true virgin forest are all options. Take a look at our safari packages, pick the one that best suits you, and let us handle the rest.
