River Kafu In Uganda
River Kafu in Uganda: River Kafu is one of tourist attraction in Uganda whose potential has not be explored clearly. River kafu is located in western part of Uganda occupying the length of about 180 km (112mls). It is naturally located in a swamp which is situated 12km north east of Kibaale district. The river rolls east wards before turning north to pour its water in Victoria Nile River about 8km north of Masindi port in the district of Masindi. This river traverses’ numerous districts before joining Victoria Nile in the north, where it passes through various districts like Luweero, Nakaseke, Hoima, kyankwanzi and Masindi.
It is also important to note that the swamp River kafu originates from is also the traversed by Nkusi river through it a raise from different locations flowing behind the swamp and pours it water in Lake Albert on Uganda’s border with Congo. The source of River kafu it stands at latitude 1100 meters while at it point of entry it approximately at attitude of 1040 meters with the overall length of 180 km from the beginning to the end.
River kafu features two tributaries that is river Mayanja and river lugogo flowing through the path ways of permanent papyrus swamp before emptying their water in River kafu. It should be noted that the main land scape of the of the river basin is composed of dense thick bush and verdant papyrus swamps.
Besides it beauty and uniqueness river kafu is also a home of various wild life species of which are also tourist attraction to the visitors who visit the site; these species includes the following oribi, Defassa, leopard, Bush duiker, Bush pig, Water buck, Ugandan kobs, common elands, Bohor reedbuck, sitatungas, among others. These can be interesting to explore for any adventurous travelers on safari in Uganda.
The source of river kafu is located in Kibaale district and it mouth on Victoria Nile near Masindi with coordinates: Latitude; 1:6475, Longitde:32.0945. and its altitude is approximately 1100 meters and 1040 meters above the sea level respectively.
It should be noted that Nkusi River, which rises from a different location and flows past the swamp before emptying into Albert Lake at the western border of Uganda and Congo, also passes through the swamp from which the river originates. The River Kafu is about 1,100 meters high at its source and about 1,040 meters high at its mouth. The length of the River from beginning to end is roughly 180 kilometers.
River Lugogo and River Mayanja, two tributaries of the River Kafu, flow past the extensive permanent papyrus swamps before eventually emptying into the Kafu River. It should be noted that Papyrus swamps and dense bush thicket make up the majority of the Kafu River basin’s landscape.
Along with its diverse flora, the River basin is home to a variety of fauna, including the Bush duiker, Sitatunga, Bohor Reedbuck, Defassa waterbuck, Bushbuck, Bush pig, Oribi, and Leopard. Any adventurous traveler going on a safari in Uganda might find these interesting to explore.
