Accessing Mount Elgon National Park
Accessing mountain Elgon National park is very quick and easy. All that is important is to present your details to a well trusted and experienced in organizing and arranging tour packages. Usually, the park can be accessed either by air transport or Road transport. The park is traced in the Eastern part of the country and can be accessed by two means of transport either by bus or plane.
The park is an extinct volcano that first erupted for more than 24 years ago and by that time it had the largest surface area of an extinct volcano. However, as of today, it is no longer active. Presently, Mountain Elgon is the 4th largest mountain in Eastern Africa with the second-highest peak known as Wagagai which ranges up to 4321 meters. Travelers should choose their own transporting systems to reach this main destination. Travelers mostly use road transport to reach Mountain Elgon National park as compared to air transport simply because road transports offer tourists with more magnificent views of tea plantations, rocks, and scenic hills which cannot be visible when using air transport.
The selection of the routes depends on the guidance of the travel operator and the budget of the visitor. Importantly Mt. Elgon National park can be accessed through the use of road transport and air transport.
By road
Mountain Elgon national park is approximately 230 kilometres from East of Kampala while using road transport passing Jinja town through Mbale town at the western base of mountain Elgon before accessing to climb Kapchorwa on the mountain Northwestern side. The roads are well-paved with tarmac but sometimes traffic jam is aproblem of Kampala Jinja High way. It takes between four to five hours to reach Mbale town through the town of Jinja and Iganga.
While of this route you can make a stopover at or view places like the source of river Nile, the Nile Bridge and the Mabaira forest reserve  From Mbale to Kapchorwa, the roads are a bit dusty, however, it provides you with the route to climbing the highest peak Wagagai through Budadili. The trailhead at Budadiri is only 20km from Mbale and is accessible by public transport. Taxis to Budadiri are available in Mable town. Porters and guides can be found through the Mt Elgon guides and porters association. Tourists can hire acar or use public means but arranging via a qualified tour operator is advisable and more convenient.
There are limited airlines that offer flights from Entebbe airport to Kisumu Airport and only one airline called Air Kenyan Express.
By air
You can as well use charter planes services to access Mount Elgon National park available at Entebbe international airport or Kajjansi airfield. These can airlift you up to Soroti airfield in the Soroti district. This can work for visitors who don’t like traveling long distances. From the airfield, you would travel by road for about 1 hour before reaching Mbale or Kapchorwa
How long is the flight from Entebbe airport/Kampala to Mount Elgon National Park?
The flight from Entebbe internal airport to Mt.Elgon National park takes about 1:15hours from Entebbe to Kisumu Airport where you can be picked from by the guide and drives you to the park which lasts only 50 minutes. And by Air domestic charters or scheduled fight that runs all destinations in Uganda.Travelers can book the chartered flight in advance from Entebbe international airport to Kisumu airport which is the only airport near the park.
