Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Activities: Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the smallest national park in southern Uganda’s Kisoro District. It was designated a national park in 1991 and has a radius of 33.7 square kilometers. It is well-known for being a haven for mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. The park is also home to over 390 bird species, 184 of which have been seen. The crested ibis, black-faced ibis, waxbills, chickadees, and Rwenzori batis are among them.

The only place in Uganda where you can go golden monkeys trekking is Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The Virunga massif is home to between 3,000 and 4,000 gorillas in Mgahinga park. The Virunga range is home to 3,000–4,000 gorillas, 42–60 of which are thought to reside in Mgahinga National Park. The permit for golden monkeys trekking is US $60 for both foreign residents and non-residents.

Climbing a Volcano: Volcano climbing at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of the park’s distinctive activities. Mount Sabinyo, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Muhabura are the three volcanoes to climb in the park. Each of these mountains takes an entire day to climb. Mount Gahinga is 3,474 meters high and takes approximately 6 hours to climb and descend. There are numerous attractions to view, such as bamboo forests, calderas, golden monkeys, and enormous lobelia. Mount Muhabura, which is 4,127 meters above sea level, can also be climbed.

The elevation is 3,669 meters, and the round-trip distance is 14 kilometers up and down the mountain. The fee for volcano climbing in the park is $80 per person. The climbing charge includes the park admission fee, and if porter service is desired, an extra fee is necessary.

Accessing Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Park can be reached by both land and air. The national park is around 15 kilometers south of Kisoro and 55 kilometers west of Kabale District. It is also 494 kilometers from Kampala City via the Kabale-Mbarara road. The trip from Kampala to the national park takes roughly 8.5 hours. You can also charter an Aerolink Aviation domestic flight from Kampala’s Entebbe International Airport or Kajansi Airfield to Kisoro Airfield, which is about a 15-minute flight away.
